Food at SchoolMorning SnackStudents in Ms. Kirsi's class bring their own snack to school each day. In all other classrooms, each family alternates providing snacks for their child's classroom on a weekly rotation. See the following snack week assignments for the 2006-2007 for your classroom:
Parent participation is very much appreciated and extremely helpful. However, providing snacks is not mandatory and you do not have to feel pressured to participate if you do not have the time or simply do not wish to do so. If you are unable to participate, please call the ILMS Office and we will not schedule you to bring snacks. A weekly reminder is sent home with your child when it is your turn to supply the snacks. We ask that the family assigned to the child’s classroom provide daily snacks for the number of students in the classroom. The daily snacks may be provided day by day or for the week. Please do not send in popcorn, carrots, grapes, and hotdogs. These items pose a choking hazard for children under the age of 4. This information is provided by the American Pediatric Association. Please do not send in juice, as the children are encouraged to drink water throughout the day. The school provides spoons, forks etc. On this web page we have included a list of suggestions for snacks that are simple and safe. In the past, we have had students who were allergic to peanuts, milk, etc. If your child has developed any allergies to food items that you have not reported on the orange information card, please let the office know, immediately. Please send in nutritious foods such as the ones suggested below:
Food for Practical Life ExercisesIn addition to snacks, we also ask families, during their assigned week, to bring items needed for some of the Practical Life exercises that teach children how to prepare food and arrange flowers. The children are provided with oranges to squeeze for juice, apples to cut, bananas to peel, and bread to slice. Children use food daily in the Montessori practical life lessons. Parents supply these foods along with the morning snacks on a rotating schedule which you will recieve from your child's teacher. You will be asked to bring the following items on the Monday of your assigned "Snack Week":
LunchChildren who stay beyond 11:45 pm at school, in the classroom or in after care programs, should bring their lunch to school and/or arrange for catered lunches. Packed lunches Catered lunches Even if you choose the catered lunch option, you should also send a drink and small snack to school as well. For more information about the catered lunch options, please contact Donna in the ILMS Office.
